Born on August 14, 1930, in Kurumpanadom, Changanacherry, Archbishop Joseph Powathil was a visionary leader whose life was a testament to his motto,"In Truth and Charity."

As the first Bishop of Kanjirappally and later the Archbishop of Changanacherry, he played a pivotal role in the growth of the Syro-Malabar Church. From founding educational institutions and charitable homes to representing the Church at global Synods in Rome, his influence spanned decades and continents. Honoured as "The Crown of the Syro-Malabar Church" by Pope Benedict XVI, his legacy continues to inspire generations.
